Hallelujah, What A Savior

Hallelujah, What A Savior - Hymn

"Man of Sorrows" what a name

For the Son of God who came

Ruined sinners to reclaim

Hallelujah, What a Savior

Hallelujah, Hallelujah,

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Bearing shame and scoffing rude

In my place condemned He stood

Sealed my pardon with His blood

Hallelujah, what a Savior

Guilty vile and helpless we

Spotless Lamb of God was He

Full atonement can it be

Hallelujah, what a Savior

Lifted up was He to die

"It is finished!" was His cry

Now in heaven exalted high

Hallelujah, what a Savior

Good Friday. I’ve read that there is no other place in Scripture that so many words were devoted to so brief a window of time. It was an eight-day span - Palm Sunday to Resurrection Sunday. How many of us are so moved by what our Savior did for us in those last days of His life? What about the day of His death?

Here’s an estimated timeline of the day:

4:00 to 6:00 a.m. - Jesus’s trial before Annas and Caiaphas

6:00 to 8:00 a.m. - Jesus’s trial before Pontus Pilate and Herod

8:00 to 8:30 a.m. - Jesus carries His cross to Golgotha

9:00 to 9:30 a.m. - Soldiers divide Jesus’s clothing. He prays for them

9:30 to 11:00 a.m. - The soldiers watch and mock Jesus

11:00 to Noon - Jesus speaks to the thieves hanging on either side of him

Noon to 3:00 p.m. - The earthquake, temple curtain torn

3:00 p.m. - Jesus dies, “It is finished”

I’ve often wondered who was in the crowd at the foot of the cross. The gospels describe a mixed multitude of disciples, women, soldiers and enemies. So strange that we call it “Good Friday''. The picture is so dark and bleak...what actually happened.

We can celebrate on Sunday because of this day’s meaning for us, we who believe and understand that the good is in the news. That the wrath of God against sin was poured out on His Son. He was the perfect, sacrificial (Passover) lamb. The suffering, sorrow and blood shed at the cross, became for us the greatest triumph over evil and God’s plan to redeem the world from bondage.

Hallelujah, What A Savior!
